"Figure It Out"

Verses to reckon with ...

50 simple, entertaining
recreational math puzzles.

The Insecure Triangle

Can you conceive a triangle talking?
It's fantastic to be sure.
Just imagine that one is speaking and
Telling why it's insecure...
"I'm a simple isosceles triangle
With equal sides 13 inches in length.
If my 10 inch base were only longer,
I'd have more stability and strength.
Keeping my area unchanged, however,
Is the only condition I must require.
Do you think you'd be able
To help me realize my desire?"

For answer see below.

P21:  This book "Figure It Out" contains 50 familiar reproducible puzzles and answers that require simple reasoning skills for their solutions.  All the puzzles are illustrated and given in verse.  ($8.00)

Answer:
Increase the base to 24 inches. With a 10 inch base,
the triangle height is 12 inches. With a 24 inch base,
the triangle height will be 5 inches.
Since the Area=1/2 (BxH),
the area with either base will be 60 sq. in.
